Broadway Actress, Marissa Perry, directs HAIRSPRAY at Landmark Community Theatre

THOMASTON-Landmark Community Theatre brings the 2003 Tony award winning Broadway musical, HAIRSPRAY, to the mainstage at the Thomaston Opera House, showing April 29, May 5, 6, 12, 13 at 8pm and April 30, May 7, 14 at 2pm.

HAIRSPRAY is set in 1962 Baltimore Maryland, where 60’s dance music is huge and segregation is still prevalent. The heroine of the play is Tracy Turnblad, who is a quirky plus sized teenager that wants nothing more than to dance on the hit television program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Her dreams come to fruition when she is wins a coveted spot on the show and becomes an overnight celebrity. With her ovewhelming positivity and sense of self, she attracts the most popular guy on the show, Link Larkin. With the support of her friends, she advocates for the show to be integrated. But not everyone is accepting of Tracy, and she goes to battle with the show’s racist producer, Velma Von Tussle.  Does Tracy succeed? Any age will enjoy this colorful musical filled with laughter, love, and embracing oneself.

The show is directed by Marissa Follo Perry, who starred as Tracy Turnblad in the Broadway production of Hairspray and last season directed Sister Act, for which she was an ensemble member of the original Broadway cast. Perry believes that “Hairspray is one of the most perfectly written pieces of musical theater there is. This show evokes a ton of different emotions. [She] loves when people are surprised at feeling moved emotionally through this show because they come in expecting a show full of pink glitter, big hair, and 60's music... it IS that, but it is so much more.” To get that emotion, Perry has her cast focus on the inner truths of the characters; “these characters are based on real people. They are your neighbors, your friends, your parents, and your children.“ Perry concludes with  “I think the theater going community will consider this show to be one of the best Landmark Community Theatre has ever produced. Not because of me, but because of the actors, the characters, and the story.” Perry is a JEFF Award (Chicago) and IRNE Award (Boston) Nominee for Best Principal Actress in a musical.  She travels the country sharing her infamous Dance/Musical Theater Master Classes and credits her success as an actor for finding passion for directing theater and teaching. She is also a licensed massage therapist and the proud owner of The Balanced Body Therapy, L.L.C. in Middlebury, CT.

LCT is excited to share this award winning Broadway musical with the Connecticut community. Showing April 29, May 5, 6, 12, 13 at 8pm and April 30,  May 7, 14 at 2pm.
