LCT’s Student Theatre is hosting a Winter Cabaret on Saturday, January 5th, to benefit the Torres family of Torrington, of which Justin Torres is a member of the program.
Nearly six months ago, Roberta Torres was diagnosed with stage IV non-small lung cancer. A mother and grandmother, her family was devastated and left wondering how they would ever be able to afford the costly medical treatments ahead of them. Justin, Roberta’s son and recent Torrington High School graduate, decided his best option would be to take a ‘gap’ year from school and remain at home, working to help support his mother. During this time, he signed up to become a part of LCT’s Student Theatre production of The Who’s Tommy, accepting the role of “Cousin Kevin.” Sharing his family’s struggles with his fellow castmates, his new friends decided they wanted to help and approached LCT with an idea for a cabaret style fundraiser.
The event will feature both solo and group performances from current members and alumna of the Student Theatre program. Songs from Broadway musicals such as “Waitress,” “Heathers,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Spring Awakening” will be featured, as well as a group number from this year’s Student show, “American Idiot.” Tickets are $20 and proceeds will benefit the Torres family. Donations can be made directly to the Torres family online at www.gofundme.com
