Songs from ANASTASIA will be allowed. Additional vocalizing may also be a part of the audition to determine vocal range and harmonizing skills. An accompanist will be provided if using sheet music as well as a Bluetooth speaker for tracks. All people auditioning should be expected to dance at their audition. Plot Summary: From Tony winners Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, creators of such Broadway classics as Ragtime and Once On This Island, this dazzling show transports its audience from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family.

Character Breakdown: Please notes that listed ages are approximate ‘stage ages’ rather than actual age and may change based on audition turnouts.

ANYA (Female presenting, Early 20s–late 20s*) When we first meet Anya she is a lost soul but with great strength, pride and dignity. As the story progresses, she begins to discover her sense of self and the possibility that she may be the missing daughter of Tsar Nicholas. Must possess a sense of humour, wit, and determined spirit. Her transformation into Anastasia should be breathtaking. Soprano with a strong, controlled belt and mixed voice. Vocal range: G3–F5 (belt to D5)

DMITRY (Male presenting, Mid-20s to early 30s*) An opportunist trying to make it on the streets of Russia by selling stolen objects from the Tsarist past. He is the prince of St. Petersburg’s black market. He creates the scheme to find an Anastasia impersonator in order to gain the reward for her safe return. He is smooth, persuasive and a real operator. Must have a sense of danger, edginess, and charm. Not a typical romantic leading man although he and Anya eventually fall in love. Baritenor. Vocal range: A2-A4

DOWAGER EMPRESS (Female presenting, late 50s-70+*) She is the formidable and imperious grandmother of Anastasia. Anastasia is her favourite grandchild and she loves her with all her heart. She never truly gives up the belief that her granddaughter might be alive but finally after years of enduring Anastasia pretenders she becomes hardened and bitter. It is only when she meets Anya that her old spirit begins to return. Actress must have elegance, beauty, and a regal bearing. Alto or actress who is very comfortable with singing. Vocal range: F3-Bb4

VLAD (Male presenting, 40s–60s*) Before the revolution, Vlad was a minor functionary at the imperial court. He is Dmitry’s right hand man and because of his romantic relationship with Lily he arranges a meeting between Anya and the Dowager Empress. Actor must have wit, style and be a character comedian with panache with generosity of spirit. He cares deeply for both Anya and Dmitry and doesn’t want either of them to get hurt. Baritone Vocal range: A2-F4

GLEB (Male presenting, 30s–40s*) A member of the Chekist secret police. A zealot with tremendous intensity and dangerous sexuality. As the play progresses, we see him rise in power and position within the political party. He is in love with Anya but would not be above killing her if necessary. Not the typical villain; he must be likable. Baritenor Vocal range: A2-Gb4

LILY (Female presenting, 40s–60s*) She is the Dowager Empress’s confidante/lady-in-waiting. She’s compassionate, respectful, and good at her job, but when she’s away from the Dowager she knows how to have a good time and rules the Russian expat roost. A character comedienne, but with allure and sex appeal. Strong movement or dance ability. Alto with strong, controlled belt. Vocal range: Eb3-A4

YOUNG ANASTASIA (Female presenting | child actor, approximately 10-14*) The spirited young Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. Curious, playful, and full of imagination, she shares a warm and loving bond with her grandmother, the Dowager Empress. Young Anastasia appears in the opening palace scenes and later in memory sequences that connect Anya to her past. This role requires a confident young performer who can convey joy, curiosity, and emotional warmth. Some movement or dance may be involved during the ballet sequence, but advanced ballet training is not required.

FEMALE PRESENTING FEATURED DANCERS / ENSEMBLE (Early 20s-mid 30s*) Dance ability—especially jazz and ballet —is a strong asset for this production. Several ensemble members will participate in a brief ballet sequence inspired by Swan Lake and opportunities may be available for dancers with stronger ballet training. One ensemble performer may be featured as Odette in the ballet sequence. This role benefits from ballet technique and partnering experience but performers do not need to be skilled ballet dancers to audition. If you have ballet training, please highlight it. If you currently dance en pointe, please list your training and experience. Dancers may be asked to perform a short ballet combination. All ensemble members should be comfortable singing as part of the show’s vocal ensemble.

MALE PRESENTING FEATURED DANCERS / ENSEMBLE (Early 20s-mid 30s*) Dance ability—especially jazz and ballet —is a strong asset for this production. Several ensemble members will participate in a brief ballet sequence inspired by Swan Lake and performers with ballet training may be featured in this moment. Two ensemble members may be featured as Siegfried and Rothbart during the ballet sequence. These roles benefit from ballet experience and comfort with partnering, but performers do not need to be professional dancers to audition. If you have ballet or dance training, please highlight it. All ensemble members should be comfortable singing as part of the show’s vocal ensemble.

ENSEMBLE (Early 20s-50s*) All voice types and experience levels are encouraged to audition. The ensemble plays many roles throughout the story and helps bring the world of Anastasia to life. We are looking for performers with strong stage presence, good musicianship, and a willingness to collaborate as part of a large company. The ensemble will participate in several featured moments throughout the show, including singing, character work, and movement. Comfort with movement or dance is helpful, but performers of all backgrounds are welcome to audition.
